Most Common Types
Thyroid cancer is one of the
fastest growing types of cancer. It is also one of the most treatable with
the highest rate of recovery and survival. If you were going to get any
type of cancer, this is the one to get!
The two most common types are
papillary and follicular. Papillary carcinoma or papillary thyroid cancer
starts as an irregular, solid or cystic mass that grows from normal thyroid
tissue. It is usually treated with surgery with an excellent prognosis for
minimal recurrence, especially if it is caught in the early stages.
Follicular thyroid cancer is the
second most common type of thyroid cancer occurring more often in an older age
bracket than papillary cancer. The overall cure rate of this type of
cancer is related to how old the patient is but is still high at 95%.
Symptoms
Most of us have
nodules in our
thyroid with the majority being benign. Many individuals never even know
they have a nodule let alone whether it's benign or malignant. The best
rule of thumb then is that if you have a lump in your neck, check with your
doctor. Here are some other symptoms to watch for:
- Your voice changes
- You have difficulty swallowing or breathing
- You have a lymph node that is swelling
Lifestyle Recommendations
Any type of cancer is serious
business. The best thing you can do for yourself is to stay informed, make
sure you understand your treatment protocol, prognosis and after treatment
therapy and work at retaining a positive attitude. Before or after surgery
consider checking in with diet and lifestyle factors. There are many
positive actions you can take to ensure a lifetime that is cancer free.
Following a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes
and low in chemical and preservative laden processed foods is the best thing you
can do for yourself. A close second is working through your Emotional
Centers and developing a positive, energy rich environment. Stay tuned for
the upcoming workshop, Balancing Your Emotional Centers.
