Preventative Breast Care
Medical science have yet to pinpoint exactly what causes breast cancer.
Links to breast cancer and overweight, excess consumption of saturated fats,
alcohol, emotional distress, family history, exposure to pesticides and
radiation, and hormone changes around menopause have been found, but conclusive
evidence is still lacking. However, what is known, is that some women have
a higher risk than others. The following may increase the risk:
- Having a mother or sister who has had breast cancer.
- Obesity.
- Not having children or having first child after 35 years of age.
- Early menarche or late menopause.
- Starting the pill at an early age and staying on it for longer than 4
years.
- Never breastfeeding a baby.
- 10% seem to be linked to an inherited faulty gene.
These risk factors are most relevant in North America. In Asian
countries the incidence of breast cancer is significantly lower than in Canada.
Women who move from Japan to the United States suddenly increase their risk of
developing breast cancer.
As worrisome as breast cancer is for most women, there are steps that one can
take to lower the risk in order to prevent this disease.
Step 1
Use the science of nutrition to attain optimum health and give your body the
resources it needs to stay well.
- Consume the right fats-Avoid saturated fats found in animal products like
cheese, milk, fatty cuts of meat, etc. Focus on healthy fats like olive
or coconut oils for cooking and flaxseed oil for making delicious dressings.
- Eat foods rich in phytoestrogens like soy, whole grains, legumes, fennel,
celery, parsley, rhubarb, and specific spices.
- Fiber not only helps clean out your arteries and blood vessels, it helps
remove toxic waste that can be stored in fatty tissues and the bowels.
Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains every day!
- Participate in biannual
Holistic
Cleanse.
Step 2
Exercise on a daily basis. Women who exercise regularly have a lower
incidence of breast cancer and a higher tolerance for stress. Not only
does it help keep weight down, it also releases compounds that help fight cancer
and boosts your immune system.
Step 3
Meditate regularly.
Meditation helps you stay in touch with your body, allowing you to access
The
Intuitive Healing System sooner and more efficiently. It also helps lower
the impact stress has on your body. In one study out of Sweden, stress
doubled a woman's risk of breast cancer. By suppressing the immune system,
stress may prevent the body from launching a strong enough defense against rogue
cancer cells. Improving your immune response, consciously relaxing, and
becoming more mindful and present all help to lower your risks of developing
breast cancer.
