Phytoestrogens: Nature's Back-up Plan
Phytoestrogens belong to a class of nutrients called phytonutrients or
phytochemicals. These compounds are nature's back up arsenal against
a myriad of conditions. The word 'phyto' is from Greek and means plant.
Nutrients are substances the body requires to function properly. Phytonutrients
are naturally-occurring compounds from plants that are responsible for the
flavour, color, and disease resistance in plants (fruits, vegetables, whole
grains and legumes). They are what plants make to defend themselves. Many of
them are strong antioxidants whose benefits include enhancing immunity,
strengthening of the heart and blood vessels, and tumour prevention.
Benefits of Phytoestrogens
Phytoestrogens are compounds that help balance hormone
levels in women. They are similar to but weaker than human estrogens and
mimic the effect of estrogen on the body. By consuming phytoestrogen-rich
foods we balance out the decline of estrogen and make it more gradual.
The benefits of these phytonutrients are as follows:
- Inhibit certain estrogen mediated cancers
- Decrease postmenopausal symptoms
- Lower blood cholesterol levels
- Protect against breast cancer
- Protect against osteoporosis
- Decrease the risk of atherosclerosis
