Hot Flashes, you feel them building. The heat slowly spreading from your shoulders, up your neck and into your face. It's so intense you wonder if you'll eventually internally combust! With 50-85% of women affected by hot flushes during their transitional period, safe and effective alternatives to HRT are in high demand. So what is are these frustrating episodes? Why do they happen during menopause? What can you do naturally that works?

What is a hot flash?

When blood vessels in the neck and head open more than usual you get a hot flash or vasomotor flush. Allopathic or mainstream medicine, views these flushes as evidence of declining estrogen levels. But women with both low and high levels of estrogen have experienced hot flushes. So there may be other explanations. Some researchers suggest that due to fluctuating hormone levels neurotransmitters become erratic, causing a vascular shift.
Other suggestions for the causes are low testosterone levels, high FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), fluctuating LH (luteinizing hormone), increased response to stress and the subsequent release of stress hormones, low antioxidant levels, anorexia nervosa, and certain medications.
