QuickTips: Avoiding Vaginal Infections

Falling estrogen levels can increase a menopausal woman's susceptibility to vaginal infections.  Why?  Estrogen causes the vaginal epithelium cells (the initial layer of tissue in the vagina) to grow plump and thick and produce glycogen, in expectation of an egg implantation.  After hormone levels drop these cells are broken down and consumed by bacteria.  This bacteria produces lactic acid which ensures a proper pH balance in the vagina.

When estrogen levels start to drop during perimenopause, less lactic acid is produced which can cause the pH levels to rise. At pH 6 or 8 other organisms, including bacteria and yeasts can cause problems.  If you want to keep an eye on your pH levels, you can purchase pH testing kits from your naturopathic physician . They aren't expensive and very worth it. Here are some other ways of avoiding vaginal infections:

  • Douching can strip or disrupt the normal balance of organisms in the vagina, as well as encouraging infections up into the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • The direction you wipe after urination can increase your risk of infection. Make sure you wipe from "front to back" so bacteria from your bottom don't aren't carried to your vagina and urethra.
  • Some soaps and shower gels may cause irritation as well as scented bubble baths and perfumed oils. Try using pure essential oils in your bath for a pleasant aromatic scent or epsom salts for soothing aching muscles.
  • If you find you have recurring irritations, have a look at what laundry detergent you are using. Some "natural" types of detergents you biological or enzyme action that can cause irritation. Mild detergents, like the ones used for baby clothing may be your best bet.
  • Wearing tight clothing can restrict air flow and create a healthy breeding ground for bacteria. Wear loose fitting clothing made from natural fibers, wherever possible.
  • To encourage a natural pH nothing beats a glass of cranberry juice, just make sure it isn't loaded with sugar.
  • Speaking of sugar! It feeds certain organisms, like yeasts, so avoid as much as possible.
  • Use a natural vaginal suppository that contains healthy bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus.
  • If your healthy flora has gotten out of balance it may be time to do a Holistic Cleanse . Try a two week program that takes this into consideration.
