Why the secret? NEW
by: Anonymous

After my hysterectomy, the joint pain came on strong!!! Prior to the hysterectomy, I was super flexible and strong! Never had this problem in my life. After some research, it seems this is happening to a LOT of women! Why is there no info or warning about this? Has anyone found a way to eliminate these joint pains and stiffness???

elbows and feet aches
by: yikes in utah

since my surgery ten weeks ago, i also have been experiencing an intensifying ache in my right elbow down to my wrists. When I asked my doctor about it, there was no explanation. The soles and heels of my feet have been so sore, its as if my achilles just told my body 'sorry, gotta go'. I am not swollen but to make a fist in the morning is like my tendons have pooped out. i am so tightly wound up stretching is about all I can bear for exercise I am so exhausted. I am having difficulty making any sense of just about everything physically happening simultaneously. Every part of my body is hypersensitive. Its as if I woke up twenty years older with the aches and quirks.. thank you so much for sharing your experience. I have been deliriously wondering when the adjustment period will be over. i wasn't sure what the heck was going on. My daily journal is lengthy as well. almost too much to bear. Just reading it is exhausting. I am trying to focus and i am just not used to 'riding it out'. I have decided not to use the patch with all the scariness in the side effects. i had a myoectomy and bilateral oopherectomy and almost at the point of hysteria-ectomy. but there are good and bad days, mostly yucky days. i hope it will get better soon. i thought i was losing my mind-ectomy as well with the elbow and feet. thank you for easing my ectomy woes, have a soothing happy day!

..from my physical therapist
by: terri

After having my joint problems start two months after menopause and having all my docs just brush it off with the "it's just arthritis" answer, I finally got a more satisfactory answer from my physical therapist. I am in a PT study with my Parkinson's disease and had to answer questions about my health in the initial eval. One question had to do with joint swelling. I said YES!! I do have that in my hands... and I told the PT my story. She just nodded and told me that it often happens that when you have a hysterectomy, the menopause symptoms can hit you suddenly and in an exaggerated way. Retaining fluid in hands and feet is a symptom of menopause. Mine was just exaggerated. I asked why my docs couldn't tell me that. She told me that it's the physical therapists who end up working with this, most of the time.
I don't know what I'd do without my physical therapist connections and my connection with a professor at our School of Pharmacy. Both have helped me as much, and often more, than my doctors!

Is my joint pain related to my hysterectomy?
by: LORI

Same here. I had my full hysterectomy in Aug 2010, which it is May 2011 now. I started having joint pains in my left and right elbows and have no range in my right arm and muscle pains in the back of my legs about 2 months ago. I hobble around like an elderly person. I do not take hormones because I'am scared to. But now I'am worried I made the wrong decision.

Thank you for responding! I look forward to hearing how you do with this. My joint troubles now come and go, so at least it isn't there all the time!

I have the same issues
by: Anonymous

I had a hysterectomy over a year ago, and just recently began having the exact same symtoms as you explained.
My left hand suffers the most, with pain and now large, hard swelling in my thumb joints, that radiates into my forefinger and middle finger.
As you explained, I also suffer these symtoms in my other joints, especially in the morning/evening and after a nap.
I too have taken aleve and ibuprofen but to no relief.
I fear that arthritis is the culprit, maybe a bone density scan will solve the case. As for the solution, i fear there isn't much to be done besides anti-inflamatory meds and calcium suplements. It may be a result of no estrogen to aid in calcium uptake back into the body, I will try a supplement and let you know what I find.
