Transforming Mid Life

In any relationship it is very easy to allow things to stagnate.  You eat at the same time every night.  Watch the same TV shows, and drive the same way to work every day. I'm sure you've experienced being on autopilot in your car. It's the same with your relationship with a partner, work or health.  You get used to the familiarity that makes it feel safe and secure.

Something happens in mid-life though, a shift in our thinking; a need for the dynamic, a need for change. Some mid-lifers chose to experience change in ways that are negative and destructive; buying a hot new car and driving it at high speeds, having an affair, or engaging in high risk sports. Others choose to experience a dynamic life style by changing religions and exploring a new spirituality, buying a new house or getting a higher level of education. Either way, the drive for change reflects a real need for transformation and a desire to add new purpose and meaning.

As we begin the process of transformation we traverse distinct steps that lead us to the path of enlightenment.  They are:

1. Stepping outside our comfort zone and even societal conventions to develop potential talents or gifts..

2. Setting achievable goals to fulfill these potentials.

3. Looking for areas of association between potential and reality to create a new reality with purpose and meaning.

4. Growing with and sharing the new reality.

Where are you in this transformative journey? What are you doing to find purpose and meaning?
