High doses of EPA/DHA and Children with ADHD
The relationship between low levels of essential fatty
acids and behaviour challenges has been shown by several landmark studies.
Now another pilot study once again suggests that nutrient deficiency could be
linked to behaviour challenges. This study involved children diagnosed
with ADHD taking high levels of EPA and DHA for two weeks and then adjusting the
dose as their levels reached those of the regular population. The findings
were significant. Assessments by psychiatrists found marked improvement in
attention, hyperactivity, oppositional/defiant behaviour, and conduct disorder
within an eight week period. Though your children may be grown, what about the
grandchildren?
Vitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance is only recently
getting recognized by the medical community as a serious health condition.
Although it is still not classified as a disease, metabolic syndrome can
increase the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
It also may be an important component to weight gain and loss. In a recent
study of obesity, it was found that obese patients had a higher incidence of
vitamin D deficiency, then the average population. With vitamin D being in
the spotlight quite a bit lately, here's one more reason to ensure you're
getting enough! For more information on metabolic syndrome check out the
Mayo Clinic's website.
Exercise Helps Diminish Menopausal Symptoms
A study out of Australia has once again shown how important exercise is to
our overall wellbeing. This comparative study questioned women who
exercised as well as those who didn't. The group who exercised regularly
had fewer incidence of menopausal symptoms than the group that did not exercise.
It makes sense. With depression being one of the most reported symptoms of
menopause it follows that exercise helps relieve it. When you exercise,
endorphins are released. These chemicals are responsible for elevating
your mood. In other words, you exercise, you feel better!
